[Pokémon TCG] Silver Mascot, Gold Card: Lugia VSTAR (Paradigm Trigger [S12] 123/098)
For the millionth time to those who might have asked—no, Lugia is NOT a Water- or Dragon-type.
Having established itself as one of the most iconic Pokémon in the entire franchise following its appearance as the box Legendary of second-generation video game Pokémon Silver and its fourth-generation remake Pokémon SoulSilver, Lugia once again makes a notable appearance in the Pokémon TCG. This time, it’s in its VSTAR form as part of the Paradigm Trigger [S12a] expansion set.
The card’s Full Art illustration does a great deal to emphasize Lugia VSTAR’s status. The first thing that’s noticeable is the card being shrouded in gold, providing an aura of majesty befitting of one of the most powerful Pokémon in the in-universe canon.
This Ultra Rare (UR) card’s illustration also features a gold outline surrounding Lugia VSTAR, a prism-like effect on the Poké Ball icon on the bottom of the card and the card’s bottom-right corner, and a white burst of light from behind Lugia VSTAR while the Psychic/Flying-type Pokémon is positioned as though it’s about to charge forward. Certainly, the word “subtle” doesn’t have any place in this card’s imagery.
Gameplay-wise, this card was at its peak shortly before the release of the Paradox Rift [PAR] expansion set. However, it’s nevertheless retained a prominent place in the current meta thanks to its Tempest Dive attack. Inflicting 220 damage, the attack allows for not only pickoffs of ordinary Pokémon, but even of some Pokémon V and Pokémon ex as well. Lugia VSTAR’s 280 HP also makes it highly durable.
In English, this card is card 211/195 from the Silver Tempest expansion set.
The retail price of a Lugia VSTAR (Paradigm Trigger [S12] 123/098) card of UR rarity is ¥14,880 (~US$98).
