[Pokémon TCG] Gengar Master Ball Mirror Emerges from the Shadows (Pokémon Card 151 [SV2a] 094/165)

What a shame that the Master Balls in the background couldn't have been in full color—had they been, they'd have matched Gengar's color scheme.

Pokémon TCG Gengar Master Ball Mirror

The OG Ghost-type Pokémon, Gengar joins the rest of its first-generation peers in the Pokémon Card 151 [SV2a] set. However, setting this Gengar card apart from many other cards in this Pokémon TCG set is its Master Ball Mirror background—something that makes this version considerably rarer and thus pricier than its regular version.

The card’s crayon-like illustration is the perfect mechanism to convey Gengar’s nature—mischievous but not necessarily outright sinister. The simpler art style also calls to mind the simpler graphics found in the original Pokémon Red and Blue video games, particularly those found in the Pokédex—adding another layer of nostalgia.

While the card’s Master Ball Mirror print in and of itself adds exclusivity, this factor has an additional aesthetic factor pertaining to Gengar. The Master Ball’s iconic purple hue matches both that of Gengar itself and the card’s background. Really, the only thing missing here is having the background Master Balls in full color—perhaps that would’ve jacked up this card’s value even more.

This card’s English version is 094/165 of the 151 [MEW] set.

One copy of a Gengar Master Ball Mirror (Pokémon Card 151 [SV2a] 094/165) card sells for ¥39,800 (~US$268).
