As we reflect on the dynamic evolution of the sneaker industry, one can’t help but wonder about the future trajectory of this ever-changing landscape. With a surge in collaborations and the palpable excitement generated by exclusive releases, it raises intriguing questions about what lies ahead for sneaker design, production, and consumer engagement.

Will this culture of hype and exclusivity continue to shape the industry, or are we on the brink of new trends and innovations that will redefine the sneaker experience? The continuous evolution of traditional boundaries prompts anticipation of what the future holds in this dynamic realm of footwear. With these topics in mind, we sought out an expert within the sneakersphere.

We had the privilege of sitting down with Dexter from Sole Superior, to delve into his journey and gain insights into his perspectives on the future of the sneaker industry, as well as find out more about this year’s Sole Superior event.

Sole Superior Dexter

A self introduction!

Hey all! I’m Dexter, a longtime sneaker enthusiast and co-founder of Sole Superior–a sneaker and streetwear convention based in Singapore.

We wanted to get the opinions from someone who’s an expert in the sneaker industry. In terms of releases and collaborations, it’s almost a weekly thing now where brands push out a new sneaker. What do you think of it, especially when compared to the sneaker market landscape 5-10 years ago?

I mean, releases will always grab the attention of consumers, but at the moment, with the sheer volume of products being released, it seldom excites me anymore.

In the past, you’d witness people eagerly anticipating specific drops, but now, particularly with the rise of online releases, that spark seems to be diminishing. We also observe a decline in interactions between people, which wasn’t an issue in the past when we had regular gatherings at in-store sneaker drops.

Do you think it has become a game of hype over product quality and design?

Not necessarily, in my opinion. Brands will always factor quality and design with mass-market hype, and this hasn’t changed from the past. However, the richness of storytelling has diminished due to the frequent releases.

For instance, JJJJound has been launching sneakers almost every few months with different brands, and coupled with their minimalist branding, there will inevitably be a saturation point.

Trends have always played a significant role in shaping footwear designs. This year has witnessed a resurgence in Y2K-inspired sneakers, the prominence of the Big Red Boot, and a growing affection for mules. In your opinion, what do you think the next ‘trend’ for sneakers will be?

Trends are incredibly fickle, making it challenging to pinpoint the next big trend. Nevertheless, given the current financial climate, I believe more and more sneakerheads are opting for utility and affordability, prioritizing shoes that can be worn for various occasions rather than investing in different pairs for specific uses.

Personally, I anticipate that comfort will emerge as the next significant factor as people recognize the value of prioritizing their foot comfort.

On that note, this year we’ve also witnessed significant advancements in the sneaker industry with brands like On Running, HOKA, and Salomon, despite their primary focus on running and performance. Do you think this positive momentum will persist into 2024?

I personally adore this revival and am guilty of joining the bandwagon. As someone who is on his feet most of the time, comfort is paramount, and the technologies found in running, workout, and trekking shoes are unparalleled in that regard.

Furthermore, these types of shoes are no longer considered unattractive and, more often than not, are designed for lifestyle users as well. So yes, I do hope this trend continues into 2024, and who knows, maybe we’ll witness the resurgence of more such brands.

What would you like to see from sneaker/footwear companies in the future?

I would like to see more real-life activations to promote the shoes. Gone are the days when brands actively aligned product drops with lifestyle activations.

I fondly recall when Nike used to organize basketball tournaments to celebrate the launch of the Lebron Chamber of Fear capsule–I attended one outside Ngee Ann City as a young kid. While technology is great, it gradually makes the consumer feel more disconnected from the storytelling.

The big one–Sole Superior 2023 is just around the corner, and this year marks the 10th anniversary! How do you feel about it all?

It’s been a surreal journey as we genuinely didn’t anticipate doing this for so many years! Yet, this year feels much like any other year when we organize Sole Superior—a blend of nerves, excitement, and anticipation, especially looking forward to seeing everyone gathered together once again.

For our overseas readers, could you explain once more how Sole Superior came about?

Certainly! I’m always happy to share the story of how our little baby, Sole Superior, came into existence. It all started when I met my co-organizer, Jonathan, while queuing for sneakers on a Saturday morning in 2012. We quickly became friends and often discussed overseas sneaker events, including Crepe City and Sneaker Con.

We then wondered why Singapore lacked its own event and how at that time, no one seemed willing to put in the time and effort to organize one. Consequently, one night while hanging out over beers, Jonathan and I decided to give it a shot, and voila! 10 years later, here we are.

What are some of your fondest memories over the 10 or so years organizing it?

Some of the fondest memories I’ve had organizing Sole Superior would be connecting with our attendees. Witnessing sneaker enthusiasts, both seasoned and newcomers, unite to share their passion is always a rewarding experience.

Additionally, I’ve had the privilege of meeting numerous friends within the scene through Sole Superior. Without this event, I wouldn’t have had the chance to connect with the individuals behind other events such as The Kickz Stand, SneakerLAH, Jakarta Sneaker Day, Urban Sneaker Society, Sneaker Party Thailand, and many others!

This year, Sole Superior will also be heading to a brand new location: HomeTeamNS Khatib. What can we expect from this year’s event that’s different from the rest?

Sole Superior is often recalled by many for consistently being hosted at a club or some unconventional venue. We’ve even ventured into the heat and rugged atmosphere of an abandoned factory for Street Superior.

Therefore, this year, we aim to explore a more friendly and spacious setting, with, of course, air conditioning. Attendees can anticipate the reunion of familiar vendors and faces, along with a commemoration of Sole Superior’s 10-year journey.

Back to the industry questions. We’ve observed a shift in the industry as brands increasingly adopt environmentally friendly methods and materials in crafting new sneakers. What are your thoughts on this trend? Do you believe brands should persist in their efforts to become more green and sustainable, even if it means moving away from traditional fan-favorite materials like suede and leather?

Absolutely! With conservation and environmentalism being significant global concerns today, I believe both footwear and apparel brands should prioritize retooling their methods to adopt more sustainable practices. And, to be honest, it doesn’t significantly compromise the quality of their products.

Take KEEN, for example—they produce sustainable products that are both durable and of high quality, proving that it can be done if brands are committed to it.

How do you think brands will leverage the latest technology, like augmented reality, 3D, or AI, to enhance sneaker designs and product personalization?

In this age of technology, the possibilities are, quite frankly, infinite. From crafting product prototypes to enabling greater consumer personalization, there’s a vast potential.

If you’ve ever come across those AI-generated renderings of future sneakers, you’d observe that they are not too far-fetched or impossible to bring to life. I’m excited to witness where such technology will take us in the realm of sneaker design. Perhaps, we’ll see more innovations like self-lacing shoes similar to the Air Mags or Nike EARLs.

Here’s a fun question. If you held a leadership position at a major sportswear company like Nike, adidas, or New Balance, what strategic initiatives would you pursue in the near future?

First and foremost, I would tap into the local creative scene for collaborations and design. To build a compelling narrative, there’s no better place to start than from home.

Take Singapore, for instance. There are numerous creatives producing remarkable work consistently. Imagine if brands collaborated with such individuals and groups in every major country, you’d have an infinite source of ideas to bring to fruition.

And of course, Sole Superior also recently put out a collaborative sneaker with Indonesia’s Saint Barkley. Can you elaborate on the process?

Creating a collaborative sneaker is much more intricate than most people would imagine. Nevertheless, it’s an enriching experience that begins with finding the right collaborators. We had previously crossed paths with the Saint Barkley boys at both sneaker and music events, establishing a compatible vibe and shared wavelength.

Once that foundation was set, ideas were exchanged extensively. We presented a substantial wishlist, and Saint Barkley truly exceeded expectations with some of these requests, such as the reflective 3M lacing and the scratch-and-smell tongue with a bubblegum scent. Therefore, finding the right group to collaborate with is crucial.

Mind sharing what’s next in the pipeline?

Currently, there are no specific plans in place, but we are eager to collaborate with more local and regional brands, with several projects lined up for release in 2024. However, the future holds endless possibilities, and perhaps the next shoe project we embark on will be one that takes everyone by surprise.

Last but not least, tell us your top three sneaker releases of the year and why!

This is my personal list, and aside from our collaboration with Saint Barkley, here are my top 3 picks:

1. AMBUSH x Nike Air Force 1 Low “Phantom”

AMBUSH x Nike Air Force 1 Low "Phantom"

I’m a huge AF1 enthusiast, and when the initial blue and green versions of Yoon’s AF1s came out, I admired the silhouette but not the colors. However, when they released the “Phantom” colorway, I was smitten. The materials are exceptional, featuring some of the softest leather I’ve ever seen on a sneaker.

2. Air Jordan 1 Low OG “Year of the Rabbit”

Air Jordan 1 Low OG Year of the Rabbit

As I was born in the lunar year of the rabbit, this shoe became a must-have for me! The combination of hairy suede and color blocking gives it a versatile look that complements any style, all while maintaining its eye-catching appeal. Interestingly, this pair doesn’t cause discomfort, unlike some other Jordan 1s for some reason.

3. FTMD. x Vans Sk8 Low

FTMD. x Vans Sk8 Low

I don’t typically wear many Vans, but when I do, it’s usually from a brand or individual I highly respect. I got to know Tunway way back when he attended a Sole Superior event many years ago. Later on, he started his own label, Futuremade Studios (FTMD.).

When I heard about his collaboration with Vans, I immediately went out to grab a pair. Growing older, I find myself drawn to earthy tones, and the shoes look remarkably good on feet.
