Kobe Bryant may have built his legacy in Los Angeles, but Kobe himself was built in Philadelphia, graduating from Lower Merion High School. Alongside the Nike Kobe 8 Protro “Venice Beach”, the Kobe 4 Protro “Philly” will also be released in the summer of next year.

Nike and Bryant’s estate resumed their partnership in March 2022 but only a few releases have been made since then. Now, with the announcement of the Kobe line’s relaunch on this year’s Mamba Day, more models—actual retros and retrofitted ones—will be released in the foreseeable future. One of which includes the pair-in-question.

Save for the hits of “University Red” that highlight the collar lining, laces, and frames of the white profile Swooshes, “Varsity Royal” takes up most of the upper’s real estate. Below, achromatic accents define the rear portion of the Zoom-cushioned sole unit.

For its finer minutiae, the Black Mamba’s “8-23-78” birthdate is inscribed along the insoles, with reflective 3M stars adorning the collar.

The Nike Kobe 4 Protro “Philly” will be released via select Nike Basketball retailers as well as online on Nike.com on 11 May 2024. One pair will retail for US$190.

Elsewhere, check out the Jordan Tatum 1 “Pure Money”.
