Two years ago, the sportswear industry was stunned by the announcement that Nike and Kobe Bryant’s estate were parting ways, due to an inability to come to terms on a new deal. Scarcity was expected leading to the product prices of the Kobe line to skyrocket in secondary markets.

But as fate would have it, nearly a year later, the two parties found common ground that will enable their long-standing business relationship, and the Black Mamba’s legacy, to continue.

Since then, they’ve remained extremely selective about the Kobe products they release, limiting them thus far to the “Mambacita” colorways Kobe 4 and Kobe 6, inspired by Bryant’s late daughter Gigi. A crucial factor in Vanessa Bryant’s decision to rejoin the Nike fold.

More Kobes however are reportedly expected to come this year, including a “Triple White” Kobe 8 that has been announced to drop on Mamba Day on 24 August (24/8).

No confirmation of its extent has been made—until now, during the Q4 Nike Earnings Call with CEO John Donahoe. He said, “It’s going to be an exciting summer as we set the stage to relaunch the Kobe brand in advance of Mamba Day on 8.24.”

Exact details are scant but its presumable that the relaunch will entail a regularity in Kobe releases. Perhaps the world will find out come Mamba Day.

When one door opens, another closes. CLOT and Nike are reportedly calling it a day.
