The ASICS Gel-Lyte III Shares the Palette of the South African “Rooibos” Tea
Spring/Summer colors. Just in time.
In 1990, ASICS introduced the Gel-Lyte III. Its hallmark split tongue design, created by Shigeyuki Mitsui, was meant to improve its fit and prevent the tongue from sliding to the side while running. Although it started off as a performance footwear, it has since transcended its pedigree to become one of the brand’s most beloved lifestyle offering. Many collaborators have taken it on as a canvas with Kith being one of its most recent partners.
It’s now riding on its inertia with several inline releases. One of which is this “Rooibos” colorway, inspired by the tea native to South Africa. It sees a tonal palette traversing the spectrum of orange and brown. A mix of materials distinguishes its parts. It’s made from recycled textiles and dyed panels on the upper with a gum rubber outsole supporting it underfoot. Branding elements on the lateral midsole and heel lay inconspicuous as well, letting the eyes see the shoe holistically as opposed to the sum of its parts.
They should arrive within the coming months though a firm release date hasn’t been disclosed. A US$140 price tag has been attached to them and will be availed on ASICS’ brick-and-click stores come D-Day. An update is in order when more information arrives.
