Slowly but surely, Mizuno will find its footing in a precarious lifestyle footwear space. Thus far, the Maharishi x Mizuno Wave Rider 10 “Fire Phoenix” and their “Fisherman” pack have provided some solid ground to steady themselves. Perhaps, the incoming “Noh Men” pack will secure another rock they can put their best foot forward on.

The three-piece collection subsumes the staples Wave Rider 10, Sky Medal, and Contender S. The silhouettes take inspiration from the Japanese Noh masks from 14th century dance-drama theater. Each wooden mask painted with natural pigments in a design to mimic facial expressions and engage its audience.

First up, the Wave Rider 10 comes with a mesh base layer affixed with flowing suede overlays and a leather Mizuno patch on the profiles. Inspired by the Okina mask, these come in “Opal Grey” and cream hues with the Kanji “翁” meaning wisdom placed on the window of the heel counter.

The Sky Medal from 1993 comes integrated with EVA tooling and Transtab cushioning. Dressed in “Ketchup” on the suede overlays that frames the mesh base, a Kanji word is also embellished on the heel counter. It’s derivative of the Tengu masks believed to ward off evil spirits. Lastly, the Contender S, is said to take its palette from the fox-faced Kitsune mask with corresponding “狐” on the heel counter. It features the same componentry as its contemporaries.

Come 31 March, find the trio at Mizuno’s website and select retail stores with a RRP between US$135 or US$145.
