Dr. Martens and big brother A Bathing Ape are as close as Frankenstein and Igor by now after a dozen collaborations over the years. Dozen is the right word, 12. It’s not hyperbole. While AAPE has been around since 2012, it’s taken a whole decade for it to try its hand at the 1461. Every dog has its day, and so it seems the ape does too.

The shoe has been one of Dr. Martens most iconic silhouettes and most versatile canvas—thus, the plethora of brands that have worked on it. Apply a new color, add a new print, pattern, or accoutrement, and the 1461 will still remain a recognizable pair. It’s as rigid and as flexible as a classic should be. An identity and build so strong that no motif can completely overshadow its essence.

AAPE takes on two colorways of the shoe in “Black” and “Olive”. Crafted from Dr. Martens smooth leather, the toebox features the Moonface logo and the words “SOMEWHERE IN THE AAPE UNIVERSE” proximate to it. At the rear, the heel reads “AAPE UNVS”. Co-branding elements appear in the insole and the out, on the underside of the translucent rubber.

Both colorways will be available at drmartens.com and select AAPE stores from 16th September.

Last week, Dr. Martens came to visit dressed in Engineered Garments. Check out the Dr Martens x Engineered Garments 1461.
