The 20-year partnership between adidas and Yohji Yamamoto is like a universe of its own, constantly expanding. The collaboration has produced their own classics such as the Y-3 Qasa, while at the same time taking on established ones like the Superstar and Gazelle. The Three Stripes has enough in their back catalogue to work with, this time around however Y-3 applies their workmanship on a more contemporary silhouette.

Presenting the adidas Y-3 UltraBOOST Light. The model carries the same functional highlights as its GE counterparts. Along with a rarely-matched level of comfort, the upper boasts a lightweight PrimeKnit upper now infused with repurposed ocean plastic in line with their environmentally-friendly efforts.

Aesthetically, it features enough of Yohji Yamamoto’s signatures to recognize its pedigree. There’s the all-black upper to start with, lending heavy contrast to Three Stripes-branding on the lateral, painted with a Cloud White that dissolves moving down the midsole. Loose threading, typical of the luxury label is also embellished at the rear, where a dual-branded tag is placed adjacent.

A release date hasn’t been disclosed yet but they’re expected to have a RRP of US$330. Find them on Y-3’s brick-and-click stores globally when D-Day rolls around sometime within the year.

Elsewehere, check out the made-in-Japan Converse Star Cruiser collection. A modern update on a 1977 model.
