First introduced in 2021 under Tokyo Design Studio, New Balance’s experimental arm, the New Balance TDS 574 (short for Tokyo Design Studio) will make a welcome return with a fresh new look next month.

From the beginning, the New Balance TDS 574 already attracted considerable attention with its unusual take on the brand’s iconic 574 silhouette. Deconstructed and pieced together with new parts including Vibram’s ridged Shark Sole, the half sneaker-half dress shoe hybrid is also intentionally devoid of any New Balance branding on the shoe profile and tongue label.

The TDS 574 was subsequently rendered in a few different colorways and material makeup, proving that this odd-looking pair does have its share of supporters. For the model’s fifth iteration that’s dropping on 3 February, Tokyo Design Studio looked to another New Balance runner for inspiration— the New Balance 2040.

Featuring a similar suede and diamond-shaped mesh construction as the 2040, this latest TDS 574 also takes on the instantly-recognizable grey-and-navy color palette of its older sibling.

The TDS 574’s Vibram sole unit and New Balance ENCAP heel counter have been retained, but are now colored in shades of grey, navy and black. On the heel tab, a hit of reflective silver is spotted; while red trimmings at the forefoot and heel complete this New Balance 2040 colorway homage.

Releasing exclusively in Japan on 3 February with a price tag of US$200, stay tuned as we continue to bring updates on the New Balance TDS 574 “2040” and any possible wider release.
