Nike Air Presto Mid Utility “Triple Black”: A Techwear Staple Alternate
The paragon of utilitarian design.
The Nike Air Presto was at one time avant-garde. In a landscape where retros were dominating the market, the Prestos stood where the Nike ISPA is at present, at the fore of forward-thinking footwear design. Although the silhouette came out almost two decades before its apex, the ACRONYM collaboration brought it to the vanguard of a nascent Techwear movement. In fact, consensus on the series is that it’s one of the best releases in 2016.
The collaboration saw the Presto raised to a mid-cutting along with the installation of dual-zippers on the extended collar. A design choice that became a mainstay in the Swoosh’s subsequent inline releases. Such is the case for the pair-in-discussion.
The “Triple Black” iteration features the titular color engulf the entirety of the pair. The uniformity lending a sense of stealthy, militaristic charm fitting squarely on the palate of Techwear fans.
All the hallmarks produced in the collaboration remain, save for the co-branding and the vibrant color scheme. Included are the synthetic water-repelling composition of the base layer, the earlier-mentioned zipped sock-like system, and the signature TPU cage from the midfoot to the heel.
Despite all the heavy-duty retrofitting, they still fit like “t-shirt for your feet”. Albeit that t-shirt be more equipped for a vis-à-vis with Mother Nature than a simple stroll in the park.
The pair has hit the shelves five years earlier but a firm release date on the 2023 followup has yet to be disclosed. Much like before, expect them to go for US$150 at Nike’s brick-and-click stores.
If it’s the color you’re after, consider the FKA Yeezy adidas Boost 350 V2 “Grey”.
