First Look: Nike Ja 1 “Day One”
Chiseled and grizzled for the NBA hardwood.
[Update 12 Jan 2023] Two years in the making, Ja Morant’s signature shoe—the low-top Nike Ja 1—will finally be releasing in April 2023 with a US$110 price tag. We are expecting official images from Nike and exact dates to come through soon, so keep your eyes peeled on this space!
Ja Morant is a generational talent, and that’s been clear from the get-go. Only three seasons in and he’s already amassed a Rookie of the Year trophy, Most Improved Player, and an All-Star selection. It makes sense Nike would be quick to pounce on the young Grizzly.
He says the signature was two years in the making, designing the shoe to not only look good on the court, but to also support the exhaustively kinetic movements of cutting, jumping, crossovers, and dunks.
It debuts in a predominant cobalt blue, inspired by the Memphis Grizzlies’ team colors. This, complemented by ombré Swooshes on the profiles. It gradates from sage green to carmine red as it wraps around the heel counter. The double mesh base layer supports the various leather overlays on the heel, its collar, and vamp. Aesthetic duties are shared on the midsoles between citron and a soft pink. The latter engulfing the outsole underfoot.
Morant is Nike’s first Gen Z athlete and the subsequent colorways is reflective of their more adventurous palate. Besides the titular “Day One” (Cobalt Bliss), comes “Phantom”, “White Sundial” (Kids), “Game Royal”, “Rapid Teal”, and “Midnight”. More details will be released sometime in 2023.
