Awake NY and ASICS are signing off their longtime partnership with one final sneaker in 2023. Named after the Big Apple, the Awake NY x ASICS GEL-NYC is an all-new silhouette created by founder Angelo Baque and team by digging into the ASICS archives.

Awake NY and ASICS first partnered up in 2019 on a pair of ASICS GEL-Kayano 5 360 and had been dropping new collaborative sneakers every year. The duo’s previous outing was a trio of textural ASICS GEL-Lyte IIIs released this past August.

In an interview with Sneaker Freaker, Baque revealed the Awake NY x ASICS GEL-NYC for the first time and shared details about their final collaborative sneaker together.

“The GEL-NYC represents the first time we were able to create a new silhouette… and since this came from all of us, I thought it was important to make sure that New York City was represented in the naming of the shoe.”

Baque said he referenced older ASICS models but “mixed in a little bit of new technology”. Appearing in two colorways—teal and coral and purple and gold—the streamlined mesh-and-suede upper of the GEL-NYC borrows from the GEL-NIMBUS 3 (early 2000s) and the GEL-MC PLUS V (1995). Underfoot, the sneaker is equipped with ASICS’ plush modern cushioning with help from the GEL-CUMULUS 16 tooling. Overall, the upcoming sneaker boasts a cleaner, sleeker look that Baque hopes fans can wear on the day-to-day.

The Awake NY x ASIC GEL-NYC is set to drop in early January 2023 at Awake’s NYC flagship store. A wider release will reportedly follow during Paris Fashion Week. Follow along for the latest release details and pricing on this pair.
