The original 550 was discontinued after its initial run in 1989 and stored away in the archives until it was resurrected in limited-edition releases in late 2020. It returned to the full-time lineup in 2021, where it quickly gained popularity among social media influencers and regular shoppers alike. For the Boston-based company’s final wave of offers for the year, the “Team Royal” effort from the silhouette returns to bring an end to the 550’s two-year tenure.

The streamlined, low-top 550 gives a modern update on the robust styles popular in the late 1980s, and its durable leather, mesh, and synthetic upper construction never goes out of style. Its longevity in the archives hasn’t been marred by age-related discolorations or yellowing, complementing the upper with a white midsole that sits on top of its two-toned outsole. The midfoot “N” emblem, tongue trim, sock liner, and mesh collar are all readily apparent as being covered in the silhouette’s distinguishing royal blue color. Final touches include a rubber outsole for traction and durability and an adjustable lace closure.

On December 21, the New Balance 550 “Team Royal” will be available for purchase for US$110 and it is limited to one per order. Have a peek at the official images in the interim.
