One of Film’s Most Iconic Sneakers Returns: The PF Flyers Center Hi
For the cinephilic sneakerhead.
Films have been a gateway to immortality, not only for the actors and auteurs that make them, but also for the shoes that appear in them. As it was for the Nike MAG in Back to the Future Part II, the Cortez in Forrest Gump, and so for the PF Flyers Center Hi in 1993’s The Sandlot.
While the iconic PF Flyers don’t hold the same reverence as the former two, ardent cinephiles will know to place them in the same pantheon. For the longest time, the brand thoroughbred, the Center Hi’s were sold out and with the company in a nadir, production on the shoes was stonewalled—until now.
Bought over in 2021, now under the New Balance umbrella and most recently, a new ownership, the brand is lacing up and pulling its socks for another run, putting their best foot forward by reintroducing their most recognizable silhouette, officially named the PF Flyers Center Hi “The 1993”. Its name a nod to and reminder of the film’s 30th anniversary next year.
It will reenter the zeitgeist in its OG form: a blacked-out 10oz duck canvas upper, a black rubberized toe box and sole unit, black metal eyelets, and black cotton laces and stitching. Through the uniform dark background, shines the signature “P.F.” branding on the lateral collar and heel. The pair will be chaperoned by an apparel capsule collection of a hoodie and t-shirt with the film’s famous catchphrase, “Legend Never Die”.
For those nostalgic for ’60s Americana, the pair will go live on PF Flyers’s website from 25 November for US$88.
Elsewhere, another retro is on a comeback tour. Check out the Nike Air Trainer 1 in a monochromatic finish.
