Pulled Out From the Vault: The Nike Air Trainer 1
As classic as a classic gets.
[Update 10 Jan 2023] Official product images have arrived. These new angular looks and closeups showcase the pair’s finer toolings; from the branding elements throughout, the signature strap system on the vamp, to the retro patterns on the outsole underfoot. There’s no release date yet but they’re expected to drop sometime in the spring or summer this year.
The Air Trainer 1 is seeing a resurgence once again 35 years since its debut. This past year alone, it has seen several inline releases along with some commemorative ones like the “We Are Familia” pack, in honor of Mexico’s Day of the Dead and the “Tokyo 2003”, a nod to sneaker culture’s ‘golden age.’
It’s quintessentially a product of its time, embodying the movement from the brand-focused aesthetic of the ’80s to the retrofuturistic design language of the ’90s, with the introduction of more sophisticated sole units and fastening systems.
Nothing much is in the way of the Air Trainer 1 to ride on the momentum its built this year onto the next. Before the curtain closes on 2022, comes a teaser of the silhouette’s next iteration. It’s a color scheme as classic as a classic gets in an unobtrusive black and white makeup.
White leather serves as the base layer with small perforations installed between the overlays on the quarter and throughout the surface of the toe box. Branding elements and some of its finer toolings stand in strong contrast in black against the uniform achromatic background. From the Swoosh on the profiles, the Nike branding on the vamp strap, the heel, and the tongue tag; to the accents from the heel counter, sock lining, and outsole.
Nike hasn’t disclosed a precise release date at the time of writing, but they’re expected be available sometime next year on their brick-and-click stores with a price tag of US$125.
Elsewhere in Nike Town, comes the Nike iSPA “Mindbody”, a product from arguably the Swoosh’s most forward-thinking design department.
