“The Great Wave Off Kanagawa” Adopts ASICS GT-II As Its Canvas
Sweeps off your feet.
Hokusai’s first painting from his “Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji” series is still in existence today. The masterpiece—doubtlessly the most recognizable piece of Japanese art—has been reproduced and seen in a variety of situations, including t-shirts, buildings, and tattoos, etcetera. Kobe-based sportswear brand ASICS utilizes it as the inspiration for its GT-II silhouette, mirroring the color palette of this print.
The series’ concluding piece, “The Great Wave off Kanagawa,” is regarded as one of the series’ best works of art. It has a dramatic composition of three boats racing forward just before a massive wave is ready to gobble them up, with Mt. Fuji standing far above the waves. Impressive details include the white Mt. Fuji-inspired emblem on the insole and heel, as well as the fiercely roaring sea, various wave shapes. To create dimension, the sole unit adopts vintage beige which mimics the background of the piece.
ASICS GT-II “The Great Wave off Kanagawa” in “White/Navy” will hit the shelves in Japan starting on 31 October at a retail price tag of JPY14,850 (~US$144).
