In the 1970s, the legendary Manchester United player George Best was Paul Smith’s flatmate. They became good friends and Paul Smith switched over from Nottingham Forest to Man U. Fast forward to 2008, the British designer began his official partnership with Man U to dress players off-pitch.

Smith, who is known for his impeccable tailoring skills, has always designed custom suits for the players. But, for his 15th Manchester United collection this year, he decided to switch things up and opted for a softer look with more casual styles like t-shirts with zip-jackets. Along with this more relaxed take is a pair of limited edition Paul Smith x adidas Stan Smith.

For this unprecedented collab, Paul Smith and Stan Smith met for the first time earlier this year. Prior to this the two Smiths have never met but, upon meeting, the icons hit it off immediately. One is known for his fashion designs and colorful signature stripe, while the other left his mark in the streetwear scene by creating one of the most influential sneakers ever.

However, the two Smiths realized they have more in common—both were born in 1946 and, curiously, neither one is a fan of soccer (or football). Paul Smith is known to be an avid cyclist while Stan Smith plays, well, tennis.

In this meeting of icons, they chose to stick with the Stan Smith’s iconic silhouette, only making tiny design tweaks here and there. From images via Paul Smith and various media outlets, we see the familiar adidas Stan Smith sneaker appear in full white. The most obvious new detail is the portraits of Paul Smith and Stan Smith on the left and right tongues.

There is also “a football update with a little help from our long-time tailoring partner Manchester United” by way of its lace tips, inner tongue and insoles which feature the Red Devils’ signature red, black and white colors.

This “Smith + Smith” Paul Smith, adidas Originals and Manchester United Stan Smith sneaker is limited to just 1,946 pairs and will drop exclusively via Paul Smith at 9am (BST) 30 Sep. Follow along as we bring you the latest updates.
