Reframing Bittersweet Memories: Vault by Vans x TTSWTRS
TTSWTRS' version of founder Anna Osmekhina's forgotten memories, retold through four Vans sneakers.
How does one come to terms with a past memory? For Ukrainian fashion collective TTSWTRS, the world is your canvas. Founded by Anna Osmekhina in 2013, TTSWTRS have always been inspired by the relationship between tattoos and the human body, and the stories and memories behind them. The fashion-forward brand made tattoos and graphic design the central theme of their collections, telling forgotten memories through their beautifully-crafted clothes.
For their latest collab with Vault by Vans, TTSWTRS channeled this ideology into four different Vans silhouettes. Working with a neutral color palette of white and various shades of tan, TTSWTRS added different memories in the form of graphic tattoo designs onto the shoes.
Each pair tells a different story. On the Vans OG Authentic LX “Ceramic” (JPY12,100, ~US$84) she recalls the memory of her breaking her grandmother’s vase when she was little and then blaming the cat. The intentional use of color—indigo on white—is a nod to ceramic vases. On the high-top Vans OG Style 24 NTC LX “Tattoo” (JPY14,300, ~US$100), various styles of tattoo can be spotted all over the brown shoe, inspired by some of the first tattoos she’s ever gotten.
Another pair, the Vans OG Style 24 NTC LX “Hospital” (JPY14,300, ~US$100), appears in clinical white, and invokes the memory of meeting a doctor who prescribed her “unforgettably bitter medicine”. Rounding up the Vault by Vans x TTSWTRS pack is the Vans OG SK8-HI LX “Punks” (JPY16,500, ~US$115), which tells the memory of seeing punks sleeping on a bench. The shoe is clad in tan leather and adorned with tattoo motifs, and rivets and studs reminiscent of piercings.
The Vault by Vans x TTSWTRS is set to drop in Japan on 17 September.
