The Nike Mac Attack, a signature produced for tennis star John McEnroe in 1984, returns after almost 40 years. The shoe has never had a retro release compared to its basketball counterparts from the same epoch. McEnroe has won 3 Wimbledon titles and was a legendary winner and whiner, nicknamed Superbrat. He had an art to his serve, whether it was tennis balls or his words.

Rumor has it, when it gets its due, it’ll come with some contemporary updates, with a Social Status collaboration rolling the red carpet for its comeback season. Although Nike has dabbled with the idea of bringing it back a decade prior with the Nike Manor, a Swoosh-less lifestyle iteration, and with some sample pairs in circulation, its mostly remained in the ether.

Today, it’s attained grail status amongst ardent collectors. Getting a pair required having friends in high places, a plateau attainable if you can jump as high as LeBron James or live in Astroworld like Travis Scott. So far, they were only spotted on the feet of the aforementioned stars: James wearing it sometime in 2021 having sourced it from collector Jon Migdal, with Scott being gifted his from LA’s Rif, apparently for research for an upcoming Nike project.

There’re no official images for the upcoming retro, save for the one from its original release. It’s a no-brainer that the pair would fit right in the current zeitgeist since the appreciation for vintage silhouettes have become commonplace. The Mac Attack is constructed from a mix material of leather, nylon, mesh, along with the hallmark checkered tongue tag with the Nike branding.
