Penny's prime may have been short on the hardwood, but his signature shoes make sure his legacy's cemented.

Michael Jordan retired from the NBA for the first time after the 1992-93 season. Soon enough, the world started looking for a reincarnation – the “next MJ” – like the Tibetan monks in search of the Dalai Lama. Before Kobe Bryant and LeBron James, there was Anfernee “Penny” Hardaway, the first one to bear the cross of being compared to basketball’s greatest.

He was even poised to take over MJ’s sneaker throne in 1995 when the original Nike Air Max Penny 1 was released. The sneaker was designed by Eric Avar, the same one who designed some of the best in Kobe’s Nike line; and most recently, the groundbreaking self-lacing Nike HyperAdapt BB.

Penny’s prime on the hardwood may have been devastatingly cut short due to an injury, but he’s getting his flowers through a revival of his signature shoes, with the latest one being this “Rattan” colorway.

The make-up features the Nike branding, the Swoosh and Futura logo, in a PVS gel bubble on the toebox, quarter and outsole. Penny’s “One” logo is embroidered on the counter with a visible Air unit anchoring the heel. While the materials used in these are similar to other colorways, the pair makes its distinction through the “Rattan” braided piping along the laterals.

There’s no official news about a release date but looking at the stream of iterations of the silhouette, it doesn’t seem like it’ll be far away.

In case you missed it, Social Status, the upscale street fashion and sneaker boutique, recently remixed the Penny 1 in “2colors.”
