Rapper Lil Gnar’s First Sneaker Looks Eerily Like the Nike Dunk Low
Lil Gnar says that his SB sneakers are made from "premium materials" and "skate tested".
[Update 26 Jul 2022] “Made $300k on my first shoe in 24 hrs,” announced Lil Gnar in a tweet with a video showing off his sneaker sales figures. When the American rapper first teased his shoe, the Gnarcotic SB Butterfly Effect, it immediately drew comparison with the Nike SB Dunk Low—the similarities are uncanny.
The orange and black skate shoe is inspired by the monarch butterfly, and is being released exclusively through Lil Gnar’s webstore Gnarcotic. Together with the launch of his sneaker, Lil Gnar also dropped an apparel collection that includes t-shirts, shorts and caps featuring the same “Monarch” colorway.
Skateboarder-designer-rapper Lil Gnar has released a series of images of his first ever sneaker under his clothing line Gnarcotic. The shoe, named Gnarcotic SBs “Butterfly Effect”, is set to drop in the next week on the brand’s webstore.
With the Butterfly Effect being Lil Gnar’s first sneaker offering, the news was understandably met with much fanfare. However, this isn’t the only thing that got people talking. From the sneaker design to the box, Lil Gnar and Gnarcotic seem to have taken a leaf from the Nike SB Dunk.
The Gnarcotic SBs Butterfly Effect comes in a orange and black colorway, with black suede overlays wrapping the smooth orange leather upper. The brand captioned “premium materials, skate tested, gnarcotic gang” under Lil Gnar’s announcement post, indicating that the shoe has gone through rounds of sampling before its upcoming general release.
Yet, it is hard to ignore certain similarities to the Nike SB Dunk Lows. Skate shoe silhouette aside, on where we know the Nike Swoosh to be placed, Gnarcotic has implemented a butterfly motif, complete with 3D feelers. A thick stroke draws out from the lower wing and extends across to the heel.
A similar butterfly effect motif also appears on the tongue label, reminiscent of Nike SB shoes. The same motif is also printed on the shoe box.
Although Lil Gnar has not released a sneaker before, he had previously spoke out against luxury brand Valentino for allegedly stealing his Tri-Camo designs. What do you think of the Gnarcotic SBs Butterfly Effect?
