Nike will be bringing back a retro of one of early 2000’s most coveted sneakers! The Nike Air Max Plus OG “Scarab” first released in 2001 to widespread popularity due to its unique ‘metallic’ coating, translucent ribbing and colour-changing gradient upper. Since its original release, it has been traded between countless sneakerheads, so many are likely to be extremely excited for tomorrow’s drop.
The futuristic design of the Nike Air Max Plus OG “Scarab” is a lot to take in. Despite the matte texture of the “Metallic Copper” upper, light reflects off it like it would off a roughly-buffed metal. The translucent ribs that break the upper into sections reflect light differently, creating a striking wave-like aesthetic across the shoe (according to Nike, these ribs are “inspired by palm trees and ocean waves”).
Depending on which angle you look at it, surfaces on the shoe that face away from the light will turn an oxidised green colour, surfaces facing the light with glow like reddish copper, and surfaces in shadow will appear as deep maroon. This means that as the shoe moves under a light source, its appearance morphs as if it is reacting to the light.
Rounding out the shoe is the sole unit, that features the “Tuned Air Max” technology. This “Tuning” uses strategically-placed Max Air bubbles to provide extra support, stability and cushioning. It’s coloured in a deep, matte black that contrasts with shiny “Metallic Gold”, adding to the variety of colours, textures and reflections that make the “Scarab” colourway so special.
