The pandemic has changed the way we engage with footwear. From needing a sturdy pair that stays on our feet for hours on end, we transformed into requiring easy-access shoes to get in and out of our houses for short trips. Comfort became at the forefront of our minds, and the increasing popularity of mules and clogs are testament to this change. However, our desire for comfort and easy-to-wear does not neglect the preference for visually-appealing design, as seen in how personalisation and “upscaling” Crocs came alongside the brand’s revive its place in the mainstream fashion space.

Nike, following its peers Reebok and New Balance jumping onto the backless shoe bandwagon, has transformed its N7 Free Crater Trail Moc into a fashionable mule that is easy to slip into and complements any outfit-of-the-day. Just as families are sometimes nothing alike spare a few genetic similarities, the only design element that ties the mule form of the N7 Free Crater Trail Moc to its original parent design is the speckled sole and toe. Material-wise, the mules follow the sustainable footsteps of the sneaker and has a midsole made of Crater Foam.

Contrasting the original sneaker’s tan suede and leathers, the mule rendition sees soft pinks and tie-dye patterns on the forefoot. Given the backless nature of mules, the woven cross-and-diamond panels that characterised the shoe is now replaced with a webbing that wraps the sides. The lacing system is anchored by this webbing, which are done in dusty shades of pink, orange, yellow and green. N7 logos are debossed onto the tongues in green, matching the heel tabs.

Though a release date has yet to be announced, the presence of official photos suggest that a launch will be happening soon.
