In the world of Pok\u00e9mon TCG, there are ordinary booster packs. Then there are some that are better than average\u2014perhaps including one or more Double Rare (RR) or Art Rare (AR) cards. A step above that would be the packs that have Super Rare (SR) or Ultra Rare (UR) cards. Those who are exceptionally lucky might even get their hands on a pack containing a Special Art Rare (SAR) card\u2014a card of the highest possible rarity\u2014or maybe even more. Sounds like the absolute peak, right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Well\u2026 not always.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The most coveted booster packs of them all have deservedly earned the fan nickname \u201cGod Packs\u201d\u2014packs that are loaded to the brim with seriously rare cards\u2014usually multiple SARs including some of the set\u2019s most desired and valuable cards. There can be no question that it\u2019s the dream of every Pok\u00e9mon TCG collector to pick up a God Pack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, that brings us to the question\u2014what exactly is a God Pack? Let\u2019s find out now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Are God Packs?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Broadly speaking, the Pok\u00e9mon TCG community uses the term \u201cGod Pack\u201d to describe any booster pack that contains multiple SAR cards while the remaining non-SAR cards in the pack all have rarities of AR or higher. As one might expect, God Packs are exceptionally rare. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What are the Chances of Obtaining a Pok\u00e9mon TCG God Pack?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Although no official figures exist, Pok\u00e9mon TCG experts have estimated that the odds of a given booster pack in a set that contains God Packs being one of them are around 1 in 600.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Creatures Inc., the creators of the Pok\u00e9mon TCG, weren\u2019t actually the originators of the concept of God Packs. The first God Packs in the history of TCG as a whole were released by Wizards of the Coast as part of Magic: the Gathering set Journey into Nyx; this took place in 2014. Subsequently, God Packs were added to the Pok\u00e9mon TCG in 2019 as part of Tag All Stars [SM12a], the final set of the Pok\u00e9mon TCG\u2019s seventh generation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. The Dawn of Pok\u00e9mon TCG God Packs: Tag All Stars [SM12a]<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

As just mentioned, the first-ever Pok\u00e9mon TCG God Packs came with Tag All Stars [SM12a], sending Gen 7 off into the sun (and moon)set with an enormous bang. The reveal of the debut of Pok\u00e9mon TCG God Packs shook the Pok\u00e9mon TCG community to its core, leading to massive sales of Tag All Stars [SM12a] booster packs and boxes in the immediate weeks following its release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. God Packs in Generation 8: The V Era<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

God Packs would make future appearances in three Gen 8 sets: Shiny Star V [S4a], VMAX Climax [S8b], and VSTAR Universe [S12a]. This made thematic sense because each of the three sets was centered around and named after one of the three categories of Pok\u00e9mon V: Pok\u00e9mon V, Pok\u00e9mon VMAX, and Pok\u00e9mon VSTAR. All three were received tremendously well; it appeared as though God Packs were beginning to reach their pinnacle\u2014if they hadn\u2019t already.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then\u2026 THIS happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Pok\u00e9mon Card 151 [SV2a]: A Nostalgic Resurgence<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Pok\u00e9mon Card 151 [SV2a], a Gen 9 set designed to cater to older fans\u2019 nostalgia for Gen 1, was already one of the most hotly-anticipated sets of all time even before confirmation that it would include God Packs. As soon as it was announced that Pok\u00e9mon Card 151 [SV2a] would indeed include these epic booster packs, the hype for it went to a completely new level. God Packs were a massive part of why Pok\u00e9mon Card 151 [SV2a] is one of the most iconic sets in Pok\u00e9mon TCG history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. God Packs Evolve: Shiny Treasure ex [SV4a] and Terastal Festival ex [SV8a]<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

God Packs have since made appearances in Shiny Treasure ex [SV4a] and Terastal Festival ex [SV8a]; in Terastal Festival ex [SV8a], Creatures Inc. took God Packs to new heights. The set contained two different types of God Pack\u2014both at a level beyond anything that had ever been seen before. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first type of God Pack in Terastal Festival ex [SV8a] would contain seven reverse holofoil cards as well as three SAR Eeveelution cards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, it was the second God Pack variant that left the Pok\u00e9mon TCG community utterly floored. Of the 10 cards in that God Pack variant, one card would be an ordinary card\u2014but the remaining nine would be SAR versions of Eevee and each of its evolutions. <\/p>\n\n\n

Never before in Pok\u00e9mon TCG history had there ever been such a stacked God Pack; the possibility of landing a God Pack was indeed one of the reasons why Terastal Festival ex [SV8a] booster packs and boxes started out selling at a blistering pace and continued to do so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Both Japanese and English Pok\u00e9mon TCG Sets Contain God Packs<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s sometimes claimed that only Japanese Pok\u00e9mon TCG sets contain God Packs. While this was true through VSTAR Universe [S12a], the next batch of God Packs found in Pok\u00e9mon Card 151 [SV2a] were also available in its English counterpart 151 [MEW]. This has continued to be the case with each God Pack-containing Japanese set since then and their respective English counterparts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 God Boxes Are Not the Same As God Packs<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

While the term \u201cGod Box\u201d does exist, it is not used in the same way as the term \u201cGod Pack\u201d is. A \u201cGod Box\u201d does not even necessarily have to contain a God Pack\u2014the term \u201cGod Box\u201d is used to describe any booster box containing an unusually large number of rare and valuable cards in totality. God Boxes can thus be booster boxes from any set\u2014not just those with God Packs. There has never been and will never be a booster box that has nothing but God Packs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Can You Weigh & Find Pok\u00e9mon God Packs?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

It has sometimes been claimed that it\u2019s possible to weigh a booster pack to detect whether it\u2019s a God Pack. While there has been proven to be a slight direct correlation between booster pack weight and the number of rare cards, the emphasis is on the word \u201cslight\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Furthermore, though it may be a clich\u00e9, it\u2019s nonetheless true that \u201ccorrelation does not imply causation\u201d. Weighing booster packs before buying them in hopes of landing a God Pack is therefore almost always more trouble than it\u2019s worth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There’s no question that the introduction and presence of God Packs have elevated the Pok\u00e9mon TCG experience. Every set which has contained God Packs has ended up becoming a major hit\u2014and understandably so; the pursuit of God Packs has fuelled many collectors’ desire to purchase those sets’ booster packs in hopes of getting their hands on a God Pack. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

God Packs have taken on an almost mythical status in the Pok\u00e9mon TCG (even if they might not contain any Mythical Pok\u00e9mon). The thrill of the chase for God Packs\u2014and, of course, the rush of exhilaration felt when actually obtaining one\u2014is an incomparable experience that represents a core memory for every Pok\u00e9mon TCG collector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
