However, this card was rather controversially allowed to remain in tournament play in Japan and Asia-Pacific. The first hints that a change might have been on the horizon, however, came in April 2024 when the card was added to the semi-restricted list. Finally, after almost eight years of disparate statuses by region, Kaiser Colosseum has just been added to the banlist starting from 1 July 2024.

The reasons behind this card’s ban in Japan and Asia-Pacific are the same as those which saw it blacklisted everywhere else all those years ago. Kaiser Colosseum is a floodgate card which many consider to have a negative impact on the metagame. When this Spell card is played, the opponent is barred from placing any further monsters on the field if the number of the opponent’s monsters would exceed the number of monsters on the player’s field.

While Kaiser Colosseum doesn’t outright end any duel, it makes things extremely difficult for the opponent at very little risk to the player. The card greatly limits the opponent’s possible paths to victory and unlike similar cards such as Anti-Spell Fragrance or Skill Drain, Kaiser Colosseum doesn’t have any effects that can be used to work against the player.

Though this card’s ban in Japan and Asia-Pacific wasn’t spurred by the popularity of the Bujin deck which it hard-countered when the Bujin deck was a major meta force in the mid-2010s, the overall reasoning behind its ban is the same as that behind the international ban.

This card is already out in English.

In its PSA 10 form, a Kaiser Colosseum (Structure Deck: Sacred Beasts of Chaos SD38-JP031) card sells for 18,700 JPY (~US$116).

In other TCG-related news, check out the Paradox Destinies Tins.
