While both models are widely recognized in the current fashion and streetwear scene, they share various similarities at first glance, and many have yet to fully distinguish their differences. To provide a clearer understanding of what sets them apart, we have outlined a few key differences between the two.

Let’s explore each point below.

Materials

!["New]("https://snkrdunk.s3.ap-northeast-1.amazonaws.com/en/magazine/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/13142619/New-Balance-1906R-vs.-2002R-What-Are-the-Differences.webp")

1906R (Left); 2002R (Right)

While material choices may vary between colorways, an overview of each model can shed light on the commonly used materials. The majority of the 1906R features a mesh base with synthetic leather overlays, whereas the 2002R typically employs either a mesh or nubuck foundation with suede overlays.

These material differences significantly affect the on-foot experience, with the 1906R offering a lightweight and breathable feel, while the 2002R provides a more protected, padded sensation.

Upper Panels

!["New]("https://snkrdunk.s3.ap-northeast-1.amazonaws.com/en/magazine/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/13155853/New-Balance-1906R-vs.-2002R-What-Are-the-Differences-3.webp")

1906R (Left); 2002R (Right)

Beyond the materials used, a closer inspection reveals further insights into how they are assembled. The 2002R prominently displays layered overlays, particularly towards the rear of the shoe, contrasting with the 1906R’s single-file overlays supported by a Stability Web on the heel counters.

On-foot, this yields a more structured sensation with the 2002R, while the 1906R offers a more flexible feel, accompanied by enhanced arch support.

Lacing System

!["New]("https://snkrdunk.s3.ap-northeast-1.amazonaws.com/en/magazine/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/13155503/New-Balance-1906R-vs.-2002R-What-Are-the-Differences-2.webp")

1906R (Left); 2002R (Right)

An essential aspect that influences both the aesthetic and fit is the lacing system employed on each model. The 2002R utilizes a classic lacing system, while the 1906R incorporates an original N-lock lacing system.

This N-lock technology employs two flexible straps that extend across the side “N” profiles to secure the standard shoelaces, acting as eyelets and ensuring an optimal fit across the midfoot. This feature adds a technical flair to the design of the 1906R, contrasting with the minimal logo found on the 2002R.

In addition to the aforementioned differences, design elements may vary for specific pairs, such as collaboration models or the renowned “Protection Pack” series. However, comfort-wise, you can’t go wrong with either, as both models boast the same ABZORB SBS heel cushioning and N-ergy outsole unit.

Ultimately, the choice between them often boils down to personal preferences.

Now that you’re familiar with the differences between the 1906R and 2002R models, let’s explore a curated list of recommended colorways for each model, available on the SNKRDUNK App.
