1. About Nike Dunk Low “Setsubun”

Setsubun Dunk with Ukiyoe of Kintaro throwing beans will be appeared!!

A unique work incorporating traditional Japanese culture into a sneaker will be released. Kuniyoshi Utagawa was one of the most famous ukiyoe artists of the late Edo period, 1800’s. His worldwide famous art is already used for Nike product. The Nike Air More Uptempo was put his art, the “Soma no Kouchiura,” (Soma’s Old Interior) on the side and created quite a stir in August 2021, just in time for the Japanese season of ghost stories. This time, the new “Nike Dunk” model, based on the theme of “Setsubun” (Japanese traditional event), will be released with the theme of “Kintaro throwing beans into the air”.

The heel is embroidered with an ogre, whose antlers form a swoosh to mean warding off bad luck. The insole features an ukiyoe print of Kintaro throwing beans at an ogre (Kagamimochi was placed behind him as Setsubun was a New Year’s event in those days). The playful design is also not to be missed, with a stroke of the kanji character for “beans” (mame) becoming the swoosh. This pair is a double-meaning of the end of the spread of the COVID-19 and the Setsubun holiday, which is a time to drive away evil spirits.
