Many brands have enough in their legacy collection to keep going, but (re)invention will be what pushes them forward. Thus, Puma’s latest VELOPHASIS, a model built atop their COMPLETE line, a defining license for them in the 2000s. It’s a branch that’s developed patented technologies such as the iCELL, e+CELL, and EverRide, now used by runners the world over.

The model’s an update on its pedigree, a Y2K-inspired design retrofitted with modern ideas and materials. More colorways are expected but leading the charge is the titular Bionic. As intended, its aesthetic is more similar to its contemporaries in the noughties. The honeycomb mesh base; the many overlays, in silver no less; the heavily-carved midsole. All design cues inspired by that epoch.

The design may border on maximalism, but the color palette remains reserved. At least compared to other models in the space. Matte Silver dresses the pair close to its entirety, from the wavy overlays, the laces, down to the midsoles. The uniformity’s only broken by the gum outsoles and the proliferations of the blue in the interior. Similarly notable is the achromatic TPU wings on the profiles.

The pair is out now on Puma.com and select retailers with an RRP of US$150. They were released on 4 February but new colorways aren’t far behind arriving on the 11th.
