Similar to how adidas is a familiar name in the sneaker world, the late Kim Jung Gi and his dense artworks are just as distinct in the art world. While the artist has dipped his toes in numerous genres of illustrations—from manhwa to holding the Guinness World Record for the longest drawing by an individual in Fisheye Art—he is perhaps best known for his sprawling landscapes of sketches that covered both objects and subjects. Most laudable is his ability to illustrate detailed pieces without the need for reference; it was a striking spectacle that melded artistic talent with photographic memory oft associated with STEM.
Though Kim has put down his brush and is no longer with us, his artistic vision lives on through the works he has produced. Among which includes this upcoming collaboration with adidas and Kasina, with the adidas Campus acting as the Korean artist’s canvas. Drawn atop a soft yellow nubuck upper are mismatched line graphics that Kim Jung Gi is well-loved for.
On one pair, a manic tiger is depicted screeching with a skull on its stretched-out tongue. A quick glance at the accompanying pair and we soon realise that a short-haired girl is pulling onto the tiger’s tail, causing the outraged expression on the animal’s face. The insoles, too, are conscientiously detailed with illustrations of the tiger. It’s a comic panel on a a pair of shoes — an apt reference to a portion of Kim’s art.
This Kim Jung Gi x Kasina x adidas Campus “Hazy Yellow” was reportedly available on Naked on 1 Jan and retailed for EUR113 (~US$120). However, information on a wider release has yet to surface, but rest assured that we’ll update this page with any new details.
In the meantime, why not check out this Nissin x Converse collaboration that’s sure to leave your tummy rumbling?
