Pokémon TCG Pope Leo XIV Signs Card

An image of a Pokémon TCG card which was recently signed by none other than Pope Leo XIV has recently been going viral among the Pokémon TCG community.

The owner of the card, whose Reddit username is “ReptileCake” and is from Copenhagen, was part of a group of visitors from Denmark, Ireland, and the UK who were in the Vatican as part of Jubilee Year celebrations. Prior to his arrival, “ReptileCake” had already planned on having the Pope sign his card.

Fittingly, the card in question was the Popplio card from Gen 7 set Lost Thunder; “ReptileCake” selected the card purely because “Popplio” is almost a homophone of “Pope Leo”. Within less than a day, the image of the signed card had been making the rounds on social media worldwide; the story was even picked up by several international news agencies.

Unsurprisingly, “ReptileCake” intends to keep the signed card for life. He intends to have the card slabbed; however, he doesn’t plan to have it graded. On Reddit, “ReptileCake” said that the memory of how he came to own this card would be a memory that outweighs any monetary value it could sell for.

This is the second time this year that the Pope has been involved in some capacity with collectible cards. When Pope Leo XIV assumed the papacy in May, Topps issued two special cards in honor of the occasion.
