The launch of ex Starter Set Marnie’s Morpeko & Grimmsnarl ex [SVOM] initially didn’t appear to move the needle too much with regard to the Pokémon TCG metagame. However, that’s exactly what has now happened; the Marnie’s Grimmsnarl ex deck is now a legitimate force in tournament play. Following impressive results at Champions League Aichi and the Indonesia Master Ball League, it’s a deck which many are now taking note of heading into the 2025 Pokémon North America International Championships (NAIC).

Strategy

This deck’s general strategy builds on the spread damage tactic utilized by the Froslass/Munkidori deck; both of that deck’s titular cards play supporting roles in the Marnie’s Grimmsnarl ex deck. Marnie’s Grimmsnarl ex itself serves a dual purpose in the deck. The card adds to the spread damage via its Shadow Bullet attack, striking an opposing Benched Pokémon for 30 damage, while also dealing 180 damage to the opposing Active Pokémon for just two Dark Energy cards.

In addition, since Marnie’s Grimmsnarl ex makes use of Dark Energy cards anyway, it makes it much easier for the aforementioned Munkidori card from Mask of Change [SV6] to obtain the Dark Energy card it needs to make use of its Ability of Adrena-Brain.

The most important setup card in the deck is also from ex Starter Set Marnie’s Morpeko & Grimmsnarl ex [SVOM]: Spikemuth Gym. When paired with Technical Machine: Evolution from Future Flash [SV4M], Spikemuth Gym makes it significantly easier to get Marnie’s Grimmsnarl ex into play. Additionally, since that Stadium card is specifically linked to Marnie’s Pokémon, only mirror-match opponents will be able to take advantage of the fact that it allows both players to put a Marnie’s Pokémon card in hand from the deck once per turn before shuffling the deck.

Price

Buying all the cards in the Marnie’s Grimmsnarl ex deck costs at least 8,370 JPY (~US$59).
