Leading footwear brands, including Nike and adidas, have joined the Footwear Distributors and Retailers of America (FDRA) in a letter to President Trump, urging him to exempt footwear from newly imposed reciprocal tariffs. The letter, signed by 76 companies, warns of devastating impacts on American consumers and businesses, citing potential price hikes and financial instability.

The tariffs, part of a broader trade initiative, include duties as high as 145% on consumer goods, with existing footwear tariffs already substantial. Industry leaders argue these new duties create unsustainable financial burdens, particularly for working families, and will not stimulate domestic manufacturing.

The FDRA highlights immediate concerns over unexpected costs for goods already en route to U.S. ports, potentially jeopardizing cash flow and staffing. The Three Stripes has already cited trade uncertainty as a factor impacting its financial forecasts.

While most trading partners have a 90-day pause for negotiations, Chinese footwear imports are already subject to the tariffs. The industry is pushing for exemptions across all sources, advocating for targeted trade policies that avoid taxing essential consumer goods. The FDRA calls for urgent action to mitigate the anticipated economic fallout.
