A recent thread on the Yu-Gi-Oh subreddit provided the answer to one of the Yu-Gi-Oh TCG community’s greatest mysteries which had remained unanswered since 2007. The unanswered question surrounded the Elemental HERO Air Neos card which was first released in Strike of Neos, a Series 5 Core Booster from 2006, before being reprinted in Master Collection Volume 3 in 2007 but was never seen again.

It was recently revealed that in 2008, US independent comic book publishing company Beyond Comics sued Konami on claims of copyright infringement, trade dress infringement, and unfair competition. According to Beyond Comics, Konami allegedly copied the design of Beyond Comics character Ravedactyl in the design of Elemental HERO Air Neos.

In the court filing, Beyond Comics claimed that Konami had direct access to Ravedactyl due to their interactions at several industry conventions and exhibitions, and knew of Ravedactyl because key Konami staff members, including Yu-Gi-Oh creator Kazuki Takahashi, had been present at many of those events.

In addition, according to Beyond Comics, Konami allegedly misappropriated specific elements of Ravedactyl’s design. These elements included its color scheme, stance, helmet, and wings. As such, Konami was served with a cease and desist and was thus legally prevented from the creation and sale of any new cards featuring Elemental HERO Air Neos.
