Black Rose Dragon is best known among the Yu-Gi-Oh TCG community for being the signature card of Aki Izayoi, a major character from Yu-Gi-Oh anime spin-off series Yu-Gi-Oh 5D’s. Despite being a true classic that’s been reprinted many times—it debuted in 2008 when it was the cover card of Series 6 Core Booster Crossroads of Chaos—it hasn’t been until the release of Quarter Century Art Collection that it received a Quarter Century Secret Rare version.

Much of this card’s appeal has to do with its major role in Yu-Gi-Oh 5D’s. In fact, Black Rose Dragon is the only Yu-Gi-Oh TCG card to have ever been the featured card of a Yu-Gi-Oh anime episode on four occasions. In the case of Black Rose Dragon, these were in Episodes 16, 41, 60, and 139 respectively.

Further allusions to the anime can be seen in its effects, highlighting the fact that Black Rose Dragon is itself intended to be an allusion to Aki. When this card is Synchro Summoned, Black Rose Dragon can be used to destroy all cards on the field—representing how Aki’s psychic abilities harm those around her.

Moreover, the card’s secondary effect which forces an opposing Defense Position monster card into Attack Position before reducing its ATK to 0 references Aki’s ability to seriously injure those she Dueled after taking on the “Black Rose” persona.

In addition to its many references to Yu-Gi-Oh 5D’s and thus its appeal to those who closely followed that series, the fact that this card comes in Quarter Century Secret Rare drives up the value of this card. The same is true of the alternate artwork featured on it.
