Yu-Gi-Oh TCG fans have been waiting for over a decade for this card's illustration to be shown on a real one.
In December 2013, Jump Festa 2014—one of the world’s largest annual animanga conventions—took place. As is the case every year, there was much content related to Yu-Gi-Oh and the Yu-Gi-Oh TCG because of the franchise’s close ties to shōnen animanga magazines Weekly Shōnen Jump and V Jump—both properties of Shueisha, the organizer of Jump Festa.
At Jump Festa 2014, attendees could purchase a playmat with new never-before-seen artwork of Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon. However, it wouldn’t be for another 11 years that the image on it would be placed onto a real Yu-Gi-Oh TCG card.
About Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon (Quarter Century Art Collection QCAC-JP004)
The alternate artwork on the Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon card from Quarter Century Art Collection is directly taken from the image shown on the Jump Festa 2014 playmat. As such, this is likely to draw interest from many who didn’t attend the event because for the first time, they can now own a small piece of Jump Festa 2014—albeit in a somewhat indirect way.
This card’s ATK of 3000, while first and foremost a gameplay-related feature, also connects to the lore surrounding this card. This is because Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon is linked to all the signature cards of the rivals of each Yu-Gi-Oh anime protagonist. All those cards also had an ATK of 3000.
This is the second Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon card to come in Quarter Century Secret Rare—the rarity which Konami created to honor the Yu-Gi-Oh TCG’s 25th anniversary. However, it’s the first one to feature this alternate artwork.
