US$200K Worth of Nike Air Jordan 11 “Legend Blue” Shoes Recovered in Major Theft Bust
This haul amounts to around 870 pairs of the coveted shoes.
Sneaker theft isn’t a new phenomenon, with high-profile incidents involving Nike and Jordan releases making headlines in recent years. The latest example involves the recovery of over US$200,000 worth of stolen Nike Air Jordan 11 “Legend Blue” sneakers, as reported by the California Highway Patrol (CHP). Based on retail estimates, this haul amounts to around 870 pairs of the coveted shoes.
The stolen inventory was allegedly taken from a trainyard in the secluded town of Amboy, California, before being transported nearly 200 miles to Anaheim. Law enforcement apprehended seven individuals believed to be connected to the theft. Speaking on the operation, CHP Border Division Chief Tommie Cocroft said, “The swift actions of our CTIP unit and patrol officers demonstrate CHP’s commitment to combating organized cargo theft and ensuring stolen goods are recovered.”
This isn’t the first time major heists have targeted Air Jordans. In late 2022, the Nike Air Jordan 11 “Cherry” was part of a high-profile theft in Memphis, Tennessee, where thieves made off with over US$800,000 worth of sneakers and apparel. More recently, in June 2023, the Los Angeles Police Department recovered US$7 million worth of stolen Nike merchandise.
The trend of retail theft has surged, with CargoNet reporting a 63% year-over-year increase in supply chain thefts during 2023. The problem persisted into 2024, with a 46% jump in incidents during the first quarter compared to the same period in 2023.
With the recovered sneakers now out of the hands of thieves, more pairs may make it to retail shelves when the Nike Air Jordan 11 “Legend Blue” officially launches on 14 December 2024.
