[Pokémon TCG] Gentlemanly Pikachu (SM-P Promotional Cards 210/SM-P) [Release Date/Price/Where To Buy]
The illustration's '60s aesthetic certainly makes the card stand out.
On the opening day of Pokémon Center Tokyo DX, the 12th Pokémon Center to commence operations, on 14 March 2018, a campaign was held at the venue. Anyone who purchased at least five Pokémon TCG booster packs would received one of two promotional cards—one of which could have been this Gentlemanly Pikachu card. This campaign was active for as long as stocks lasted.
About Gentlemanly Pikachu (SM-P Promotional Cards 210/SM-P)
Of the two seventh-generation promotional cards issued as part of the campaign commemorating the opening of Pokémon Center Tokyo DX, this one fetches the higher price. As is the case with countless other cards which have featured Pikachu in a costume, Gentlemanly Pikachu is a standout pickup because of its unique concept and design which have never since been repeated and are unlikely to ever be seen again. Additionally, the card’s status as part of an on-site limited-time promotion greatly elevates its price.
Gentlemanly Pikachu’s first attack is named New Open—an obvious allusion to the opening of Pokémon Center Tokyo DX to which this card is linked. The attack’s effect also references the fact that this card was handed out as part of a promotion because it requires both players to reveal the top card of their respective decks before putting that card in hand.
Another reference to Pokémon Center Tokyo DX can be seen on the right side of the card where the logo of Tokyo’s third Pokémon Center has been placed. Finally, the clothing being worn by Gentlemanly Pikachu is that of a fashion style which was commonly seen in upscale areas of Tokyo in the ’60s—an allusion to the Pokémon Center’s location.
