Bodega Outfits the Suicoke Kaw Sandals in Jeanuine Denim
We'll be denimed — it's a sandal that'll last you through the ages.
Bodega was the sneaker scene’s first “speakeasy”. Located behind a bodega (hence the name), the first shop was only accessible through a secret door. However, 16 years down, the brand has moved from an “IYKYK” space to a global curator of sneakers that has numerous collaborative accolades under its name. Its sneakerverse contains the partnerships with the mainstays — Nike, adidas, Reebok, Vans, New Balance… Just to name a few.
Now, the brand is expanding its sneaker lore into casual footwear, starting off with a redesign of the Suicoke Kaw Sandal. Wanting to channel the idea of individuality and appreciating the beauty of wearing-in your garments (instead of wearing away that has been purported by fast fashion), Bodega revamps the upper of the Kaw Sandal with genuine, washed denim. The idea behind this choice is that denim ages gracefully: the natural wear gives personality to the textile, lending it a unique “One of One” quality (which is also the name of this collaborative project!).
The cultural history of denim itself also embodies the idea of individualism. It is a popular canvas for DIY projects, patchwork, embroidery, painting, distressing… The list goes on. Complementing this light wash of denim are blue hues on the lining and straps. Bodega’s branding is seen on the brass buttons, which are also commonly found on jeans and other denim products.
For this collaborative campaign, Bodega and Suicoke have also enlisted the help of designers to cover the sandals in their own creative flair. Textile artist Adrienne chooses to cover the shoe in Sashiko stitching and wool knit weaves. Similarly, u*b*U* online’s Tim drapes his pair in ornate buttons for an eye-catching design. Professional artist Julia paints the upper and outsole with abstract use of color. She even stashes brushes and paint between the straps!
This Bodega x Suicoke Kaw Sandal “One of One” will be made available on September 2 at 12PM EDT (3 September, 12AM SGT) on Bodega’s website. It will be priced at US$220.
