Two of the cards released as part of the Red Edward Newgate Starter Deck [ST-15] in July 2024 have gone on to become important parts of new variants of the Red Newgate and Red/Blue Marco decks. One of these two cards which have now become ONE PIECE Card Game metagame staples is the Starter Deck’s Portgas D. Ace card.

About Portgas D. Ace (Red Edward Newgate [ST-15] ST15-005)

This card primarily serves as a defensive piece; it effectively has to be KO’d twice before being removed from play. That’s because Portgas D. Ace has an effect which once per turn, when targeted by anything which would ordinarily KO it, reduces its own Power by 2000 but keeps it in play. This adds survivability to the deck’s Leader card.

On top of that, this card has the Rush feature; as such, it can attack on the turn it’s played. With a Power of 6000, Portgas D. Ace therefore poses a threat on offense as well as defense. Red/Blue Marco cards can pair it with two other Red Edward Newgate Starter Deck [ST-15] cards—Thatch and the Edward Newgate Character card—for maximum effect. Red Newgate deck players, meanwhile, can swap out the Edward Newgate Character card for two other cards from the same Starter Deck: Atmos and Kingdew.

Interestingly, despite its rarity of Super Rare (SR), a Portgas D. Ace (Red Edward Newgate [ST-15] ST15-005) card doesn’t cost all that much. A copy sells for 320 JPY (~US$2.11).
