As Supreme-heads jostle for one of the year’s hottest drops from the streetwear giant, they might soon be faced with a piece of bad news.

According to a report by Complex, Tremaine Emory, a well-regarded African American designer in the fashion industry and founder of rising label Denim Tears, has parted ways with Supreme after just two seasons as its creative director.

The news hasn’t been confirmed by either party. Tremaine Emory was appointed as Supreme’s creative director, a first for the VF Corp-owned brand, last February.

In the two seasons since Emory came onboard, he has injected a new lease of life into Supreme. Fans and critics praised how Supreme, under Emory’s vision, has started collaborating with emerging NYC designers like Matthew Valdez, brought back grail-level pieces and engaged a younger crowd by featuring one of their generation’s heroes.

Although Complex’s sources didn’t reveal the reason for Emory’s reported departure, the publication cited a quote of Emory from a recent interview, alluding to his disillusionment with big fashion conglomerates and media groups.

“If you seek their validation because so and so made you creative director, you’re losing. In fact, you’ve already lost. But if you seek validation, firstly, in yourself and secondly, in the community that you care about and who cares about you, you’ve got a chance to live a life without regrets,” Emory was quoted as saying.
