As retro and Y2K aesthetics make a return in fashion trends, adidas employs its own revival of older designs, namely the early 2000s’ Supernova Cushion 7. This performance running shoe has been given a new lease of life through themed makeovers. The latest of which is the “Sesame” colourway inspired by the 1993 American film “Groundhog Day”.
Contributing to the reincarnation of the Supernova Cushion 7 is NAKED Copenhagen, a women-focused boutique that advocates for female sneakerheads. The boutique’s passion for a female-centric approach to a traditionally male market is seen through their previous collaborations, which include New Balance and Nike. Their sixth collaboration with adidas sees the Supernova Cushion 7 transformed into a sleek “Onyx”.
The idea of “Onyx” is sparked from a desire to explore energy in its physical, emotional and spiritual forms. It derives from the fact that our every action utilises energy, be it running or taking a breath. Yet our source of energy is not merely ourselves, but is also generated from the relations we have with others. Such a focus on energies stems from the Supernova Cushion 7’s runner roots, and the “Onyx” revamp sees the design crafted to efficiently expend and expel energy.
Breathable black mesh on the upper aids in releasing excess heat while the adiPRENE midsole dissipates the shock of kinetic energy. Essential technologies for the runner or individual on-the-go! Beyond its functionality, the “Onyx” namesake manifests in the sleek black that characterises the shoe. Adding interest is the shifting iridescence that coats the fore and purple accents that mark the NAKED logo and heel.
This modern rendition of the Supernova Cushion 7 will be released on 20th May and retails for 104 Euros. For more images and where to purchase, keep reading:
