Despite being one of the original 151 first-generation Pokémon, Omanyte had historically never been able to achieve much popularity within the fandom. This, however, changed with the introduction of Twitch Plays Pokémon in 2014 in which Twitch users attempted to progress a Pokémon Red playthrough by inputting commands via Twitch chat.

Many times during the playthrough, the commands input led to the Helix Fossil in the player’s bag often being accidentally clicked on—and this led to jokes that the protagonist was using the Helix Fossil like a religious item of some sort. This in turn led to memes about the “Church of Helix” and subsequently Omanyte because Omanyte is the ancient Pokémon in the Helix Fossil which can be restored to life.

The Full Art illustration of this card from Pokémon Card 151 [SV2a] depicts Omanyte swimming underwater alongside other prehistoric Pokémon; in the background, a second Omanyte can be seen as well as three Kabuto and Omanyte’s evolution Omastar. It’s an image which thus expands upon the Pokémon universe’s lore; adding to its appeal is the card’s rarity of Art Rare (AR).

As has been mentioned, the memes surrounding the Helix Fossil and thus Omanyte that spawned from Twitch Plays Pokémon have greatly elevated the profile of Omanyte within the Pokémon fandom. Over a decade after the conclusion of the original run of Twitch Plays Pokémon, it’s still what most Pokémon fans most closely associate with the Spiral Pokémon.
