When Cyndaquil and its evolutionary line was confirmed for inclusion in Gen 8 spin-off video game Pokémon Legends: Arceus, the Gen 2 Fire-type starters received a long-overdue popularity boost. However, that level of publicity was nothing like what would transpire some time later—and that in turn drew more eyes to cards featuring, in particular, Cyndaquil’s final evolution Typhlosion; this includes the Hisuian Typhlosion VSTAR card shown here.

About Hisuian Typhlosion VSTAR (Battle Region [S9a] 085/067)

There’s not all that much different about this Hyper Rare (HR) card from Battle Region [S9a] compared to others of the same rarity. The card comes in a layer of rainbow holofoil, providing the card with immediate visual impact. However, it’s the controversy over Typhlosion itself which most Pokémon fans associate with that Pokémon and has thus brought more publicity to this card.

The “teraleak” of October 2024—so named because more that one terabyte of Pokémon-related information was leaked to the public—revealed that in-universe lore about Typhlosion and its interactions with a certain human had been written but, of course, not actually used in the final product. Given the nature of this new lore surrounding Typhlosion, the Fire-type Pokémon found itself the subject of much controversy and many memes essentially overnight.

A Hisuian Typhlosion VSTAR (Battle Region [S9a] 085/067) card doesn’t cost all that much, selling for just 900 JPY (~US$6.11) per copy.
