The change has proven to be a rather controversial one.

Konami has confirmed that from a date yet to be determined, the “double-loss” rule will be introduced to Yu-Gi-Oh TCG tournament play outside Japan and Asia-Pacific. This date will be at some point after the upcoming Yu-Gi-Oh World Championship 2025, to be held in Paris in September.

According to the double-loss rule, any match which runs out of time will be regarded as a loss for both players regardless of the state of the game at that point.

This change has prompted considerable backlash from many in the community as some are worried that the introduction of the double-loss rule will lead to players choosing to stall for time and “take their opponent down with them”.

In Japan and Asia-Pacific, a modified version of this rule is already active; if time runs out during Game 1 of the match (but only Game 1), the match is regarded as a double loss.
