Snow Peak and Merrell have reunited for a second collaboration, turning their attention to the MTL LONG SKY 2—a silhouette originally introduced to the trail running scene in 2022. The outcome, the MTL Long Sky 2 Matryx SP, sees the Japanese outdoor specialist and the American performance brand deliver an ultra-durable, minimalist footwear defined by its monochrome makeup.

This release marks a shift from their previous effort, the Moab Speed 2 GORE-TEX, which arrived in the spring and was characterized by a bulkier build. In contrast, the MTL Long Sky 2 Matryx SP takes on a slimmer profile with a streamlined upper, yet stands out for its technical precision.
At its core, the sneaker features a MATRYX® upper reinforced with +TPU—an advanced blend of Kevlar fibers and robust polyamide. This build maximizes abrasion resistance and limits stretch, supporting a pared-back look that reduces overlays for enhanced breathability and fit.

Aesthetically, Snow Peak elevates the minimalist approach with black-on-black treatment throughout, a nod to the charcoal hues of a classic campfire. Branding is subtle yet well-intentioned: Merrell’s wordmark runs across the lateral panel, while the Snow Peak logo adorns the heel and insole.
Merrell’s expanding catalog of contemporary collaborations has expanded its creative footprint, most recently with ventures such as an avant-garde moc alongside côte&ciel in late June and a suede mule crafted with London-based YMC in March.
