[Pokémon TCG] PokéNIC Withdraws from Nijigen Expo 2025 Following Scalping Allegations
It's not often that the most controversial part of an animanga convention is a TCG vendor.
Controversial Malaysia-based Pokémon TCG online store PokéNIC recently withdrew from Nijigen Expo 2025, one of the leading animanga conventions in Malaysia, following allegations of scalping levelled against it by many in the local Pokémon TCG community.
PokéNIC had initially been confirmed to be present at Nijigen Expo 2025 on 8 July to much backlash from netizens who shared experiences of allegedly having been scalped by PokéNIC. Additionally, according to an Instagram user who preferred to remain anonymous, the fact that PokéNIC claimed to have made a profit of 2 million MYR (~US$470,000) in just its first three months of operation should have raised a red flag that they were involved in scalping.
According to this same user as well as several other users on social media, PokéNIC would open up pre-existing booster packs, repackage the cards into their own custom-made “booster packs” featuring images derived from generative AI prompts, and sell those “booster packs” at exorbitant prices.
In addition, PokéNIC is allegedly involved in a legal dispute surrounding the similarity of its logo to the official Pokémon logo. As such, later on 8 July, Nijigen Expo confirmed via a Facebook post that PokéNIC would be withdrawing from the event which was held on 12-13 July 2025.
PokéNIC has not yet commented on either the allegations or its withdrawal from Nijigen Expo 2025.
