Mega Evolution Makes a Spectacular Comeback
One of the most shocking announcements—and one which was greeted with much delight by the Pokémon fanbase—of Pokémon Day 2025 on 27 February was the reveal that Mega Evolution would be returning to the Pokémon video games in the upcoming spin-off game Pokémon Legends: Z-A.
Having only been present in the video games in Gen 6 and 7, Mega Evolution—the mechanism by which selected Pokémon morph into exceptionally powerful forms while in combat—brought back many memories for countless Pokémon fans, especially those who grew up with Gen 6 (2013-16).
As would have been expected, this announcement was actually a hint that Mega Evolution would be returning to the TCG soon, and it wasn’t long before this was indeed confirmed. Dual set Mega Brave [M1L] and Mega Symphonia [M1S] will bring Mega Evolution back to the TCG. In fact, the TCG will experience the power of Mega Evolution before the video games do, as Mega Brave [M1L] and Mega Symphonia [M1S] will be released in August, while Legends: Z-A won’t be out until 16 October.
Headlined by Mega Lucario ex (Mega Brave [M1L]) and Mega Gardevoir ex (Mega Symphonia [M1S]), this dual set marks the beginning of the Mega era—the second era of the Pokémon TCG’s ninth generation. Several other fan-favorite Megas will also be making their returns to the TCG.
Mega-Evolved Pokémon wield colossal power, but there’s a big risk/reward factor in play. When a Mega-Evolved Pokémon is KO’d, it yields a whopping three Prize cards—often enough to swing the momentum of a game on the spot. Cards featuring Mega-Evolved Pokémon also have a Pokémon-ex symbol with a new design:
Although Mega Evolution made cameo appearances in seventh-generation TCG sets Miracle Twin [SM11] and Alter Genesis [SM12], these were on stand-alone cards; there was no way to Mega Evolve one’s Pokémon during gameplay. As such, the actual Mega Evolution mechanic had been retired by Creatures Inc. at the end of Gen 6 before being brought back in Mega Brave [M1L] and Mega Symphonia [M1S].
Of course, it’s not just about the Megas. Mega Brave [M1L] and Mega Symphonia [M1S] each include 63 non-secret rares; in addition, Mega Brave will have at least 20 secret rares while Mega Symphonia will have at least 19. Characters such as Wally, Lillie, and Acerola will be making appearances. In addition, one card has already been confirmed to be a reprint: the Super Rare (SR) Night Stretcher card from Mega Brave [M1L].
What’s in a Mega Brave [M1L] / Mega Symphonia [M1S] Box?
Based on previous sets of similar structure, every booster box is expected to contain:
- 1 × SAR, SR, or UR per box
- 3 × AR
- 4 × RR
- Occasional “double-hit” boxes may contain 2 SAR/SR/URs

Final Thoughts: How Popular Will the Set Be?
For the second set in a row, Creatures Inc. is releasing a dual set based on an aspect of the Pokémon franchise’s past. Since Mega Evolution was introduced in Gen 6, it’s also thematically fitting that Mega Brave [M1L] and Mega Symphonia [M1S] come directly after Gen 5 nostalgia-filled dual set Black Bolt [SV11B] and White Flare [SV11W].
While Mega Brave [M1L] and Mega Symphonia [M1S] isn’t expected to be on the level of iconic sets such as Pokémon Card 151 [SV2a] or Terastal Festival ex [SV8a] (let’s be real—what is?), one thing which it does have going for it is the depth of the set. Even cards with rarities as low as AR, such as Bulbasaur, Inteleon, and Riolu, have already drawn attention from some collectors.
Additionally, the cards’ expected early scarcity due to the relatively smaller quantity of initial print runs is anticipated to drive demand for the cards further. As such, while the set’s absolute peak chase SARs might not rise to quite the level of some others, Mega Brave [M1L] and Mega Symphonia [M1S] are likely to contain nonetheless a wide range of cards which almost any collector would love to get their hands on.
