At first glance, despite having a reverse holofoil version, the Popplio card from seventh-generation English Pokémon TCG set Lost Thunder doesn’t appear all that remarkable. While that may be true on the surface, a recent turn of events which has been making major news within the Pokémon TCG community and beyond has sent this card’s profile soaring far beyond what would’ve originally been expected.

About Popplio (Lost Thunder 64/214)

A Pokémon TCG collector from Denmark recently had a copy of this card signed by Pope Leo XIV; he chose this card to be the one signed by the Pope because “Popplio” sounds somewhat similar to “Pope Leo”. The story made headlines not only within the TCG community, but outside it too as it was reported on by multiple international news agencies. As such, the card has been given a spotlight which hardly anyone could ever have expected when it was first released in November 2018.

As for the card itself, although its rarity is only Common, the fact that it does have a reverse holofoil version contributes to its value. That being said, it’s always been relatively affordable even in its reverse holofoil version; however, it wouldn’t be a surprise if this were to change soon following the flood of publicity that this Popplio card has received.

In Japanese, this card is card 051/SM-P from the SM-P Promotional Cards.

A Popplio (Lost Thunder 64/214) card sells for just 220 JPY (~US$1.50) as of the latest figures.
