To counter the wave of scalping that has continued to ravage the TCG scene, major retailers as well as local card stores (LCSs) have taken steps to counter these scalpers. The latest LCS to do so is Comics Games and Coffee, based in Chichester, UK.

Comics Games and Coffee has begun imposing major surcharges for purchases of sealed products. To obtain the TCG products in question at MSRP, the buyer will have to have a staff member unseal all items to be purchased beforehand. Those who intend to make a sealed purchase, on the other hand, will have to pay around double the MSRP.

Although there have been a handful of other LCSs to make a similar move, Comics Games and Coffee stands out because this price increase placed on sealed products is the largest documented surcharge of its type to date.

This step has been taken to deter scalping because scalpers almost always purchased products while sealed, then sell them to unsuspecting buyers at exorbitant prices that way. The idea behind the surcharge is thus to dissuade scalpers from purchasing excessive quantities of the item(s) in question so as to turn a hefty profit.
